In this tutorial you will learn how to mix kick drum with kick drum samples. This is a great way to add definition to an acoustic kick drum. You'll also learn how to implement this technique with both a recorded acoustic kick and most drum virtual instruments.

Excellent knowledge base.
Dave,
Love the videos. My question has to do with bass and drums. Are the larger studios still advancing the bass slightly ahead of the drums in the mix, or vice / versa, (say 1/millionth of a second), to allow them not to bury each other, or has this technique been replaced?
This is one technique but not as widely used today. A more modern approach, aside from EQing properly, is to to sidechain ducking with compression. So you use the kick drum to trigger a fast attack/release compression on the bass it self. Every Time the kick is hit, the bass would then duck down a few db to make room for the kick to come through. This is the most common technique I’ve seen nowadays. However, slightly delaying the bass line could still work well in some situations. Thanks for the question.
Hi Dave thanks so much for this vid. I use virtual instruments almost exclusively in the folk/country genre. I struggle getting that nice solid kick with the hi end attack that will cut through the mix. Looking forward to giving this a shot. I appreciate all the cool advise you give out.
Cheers RD
Great stuff as always. Interesting.
Great video. Just curious on his you convert the midi to analogue?
If I said analogue in the video I misspoke and meant, midi to wav. ;). To do this I programed my drums with the Virtual instrument as got the rhythm set exactly as I wanted it. Then I just soloed each individuation drum and rendered these single tracks one at a time, and reimported them back into the project. Hope that makes sense?
Thanks a lot, i’ll give it a try. You said wav, that’s what I meant as well… thanks, cheers!
No problem, thanks for the comment and let me know how it goes for you.
Very informative. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Rob!
