Using reverb in a mix can be one of the most effective ways to add life and space to a project. That said, there is more than one way to apply this effect to any given track.
In this tutorial I'm going to show you how I'd recommend using reverb in a mix. I'll also show you how to configure this technique that will work in any DAW and on virtually any track within your projects. Make sure to leave a comment after you've watch the video as I'd love to hear your thoughts.

awesome as always .. many thanks for simplifying very valuable techniques!
I just finish watching this video and was very inspired by your presentation. I am a very very green newbie when it comes to understanding digital recording and have come to the realization that I will have to put in many hours of learning and studying to be able to progress. Your explanation of how to use reverb in a mix was very helpful, and I know I have to spend a lot more time simply learning the basics. Thank you so much and I’m looking forward to spending more time in recording school!
Yo Dave!
You know, Ableton has dedicated tracks labeled “Reverb” and “Delay”, looks like for just the thing you’ve described. I’m starting out (or more accurately, re-starting) on my home recording projects and that’s one of the reasons I’m kind of digging on Ableton. Their set-up operates similarly to what it looks like you’ve got going in Reaper…they call their tracking view “Arrangement View” and they’re mixer view “Session View”, but I think the operate the same and I’m able to follow along with what you present. Plus the Lite version was free with my Scarlett 2i2 interface (I only need the two monitor outs for now).
Thanks Just got to work it out in Qubase. Great
I have been using Akai DPS 24 for years, which is all in one standalone. I was trained old school in studios for decades so for me iys a good fit. I often print reverbs and other fx to a stereo track so i can make movements and adjustmeents during setting up automated mix. You can never assume that the same amount and tone of a reverb is good all the way through a song, so i love the ability to change vol,eq,pan during mix. Thanks for giving the folks good tips and mixing wisdom
Very well done explanation of good reverb routing practices. I would also say that I do this with delays as well, for all the same reasons.
hey David!
Whats that reaper Theme?
Hey Craig, here’s a redirect link to download it. https://homemusicstudio1.com/rea-evolution-theme
Excellent as usual. I’ll work with come tomorrow.
Let me know how it goes for you Rob. Thanks for the comment.
Dave, it’s information like ‘Using Reverb In A Mix’ that convinced me to be on board with HMS1. I can’t thank you enough!
Ha ha ;) Well I’m glad for that Rick, happy to help!
All good info. I see lots of beginners and lots of “experts” putting their verbs on inserts. Remember also that on some DAWs the time based processors may not have separate wet/dry controls. Using a wet/dry control to mix time based processors will lower the level of your original signal. So good advice, keep it coming!
Good points Francis, thanks for the comment.
Hey David. Thanks for this tip. Really helpful. I usually do inserts per channel for reverbs. But now thanks to you I’ll be saving up ram and cpu usage. Once again, Thank You.
P.s. Your videos are very informative and easy to understand. Keep them coming.
Your welcome Elijah and I’ll keep em coming ;).
Hi Dave, Your videos always make me think about what I’m doing, which is always a useful, stand back and look at it again process. Thanks for that :)
I’m glad for that Ian, hope this is a helpful thing for you. Best,
I am new to Home recording. I have not completed all of the equipment yet, but I absolutely love the way you teach. You don’t just assume we know “the little things”, which some may find tedious, but for those like myself, who are musicians and vocalists first, need this step by step approach. I found this “Using Reverb In A Mix” video to be absolutely brilliant in approach. It is exactly what I want, reverb on some tracks, and not on others.
Thank you,
Ted W. Rowland
That Great Ted! Thanks for the comment. Best,
Thank for making things understandable.
Your welcome Ken, thanks for the feedback. ;)
Your instruction and videos have absolutely made it easier for me to understand and build experience in this craft. I am inspired to continue to discover and learn more, thank you for assisting and educating us.
You very welcome Derek, thanks for the comment!
